Last released in 2016, the upcoming drop marks the sixth time this unique colourway has hit the market, and arguably its most meaningful return yet.
Unlike most Air Jordans etched into hardwood history, Michael Jordan never wore the Air Jordan 9 in an NBA game with the Chicago Bulls. The reason? The model debuted in late 1993, just weeks after MJ shocked the world by stepping away from basketball following his third straight championship. That absence only added to the mystique.
Design Details:
Designed by Tinker Hatfield, the Air Jordan 9 reflected Jordan’s global superstardom post-1992 Olympics, featuring multilingual details and globe-inspired elements, an international lens unlike anything before it. While MJ skipped NBA minutes in them, he did rock a cleated AJ9 during his baseball stint with the Birmingham Barons, and later wore the White/Black/True Red pair briefly in the 1996 cult classic Space Jam.

Though overshadowed by the iconic Air Jordan 11 ‘Space Jam’, the AJ9 quietly built its own legacy. NBA stars like Penny Hardaway and Mitch Richmond kept the silhouette alive with player exclusives, while Tupac Shakur cemented its off-court credibility.
The ‘Space Jam’ nickname itself didn’t officially stick until Jordan Brand’s 2016 retro campaign, adding that extra element of excitement to an already layered sneaker story.

Slated to release for $215 in adult sizes, the Air Jordan 9 ‘Space Jam’ returns August 8th via Nike SNKRS and select Jordan Brand retailers. With Space Jam celebrating its 30th anniversary in November 2026, this release feels less like a retro and more like a full-circle moment.
