BLACKPRINT 03: HOW BLACK BASKETBALL PLAYERS SHAPED TRAINER CULTURE
This Black History Month, we celebrate the individuals who have challenged the status quo and paved their own lane of greatness within the creative industry. Our three- part ‘BLACKPRINT’ series is an ode to those individuals who have inspired, motivated, and uplifted the community in many more ways than one. Whether it's spitting eclectic rhythms on a rap beat, being the upper echelon of fashion trends, or becoming the kingpin of the courts, every moment matters, and we want to make a Blackprint of it. For our final instalment, we look back at six Black basketball players whose sneaker legacies have travelled far beyond the hardwood. From Penny’s Foamposites to Shai’s Converse chapter, these are the names behind the pairs, and the influence we still lace up today. 1. Penny Hardaway: Coining The Foamposite LegacyFor many, the ’90s NBA was basketball’s golden era. Rising talent, fierce rivalries, and personalities you couldn’t take your eyes off. The footwear had plenty to say, too.Enter the Nike Air Foamposite One.Designed by Eric Avar and introduced in 1997, its sculpted shell looked like it had arrived several seasons ahead of everyone else. Penny Hardaway became inseparable from the silhouette, with its electric Dark Neon Royal upper and signature 1 Cent branding giving the Orlando Magic star a suitably distinctive look. The ball was in his court, and the Foamposites were on his feet.Penny gave an unconventional design a recognisable personality. You didn’t need to understand how the upper was manufactured to understand why it looked good with an Orlando jersey. Its life beyond basketball became just as interesting. Supreme’s graphic-covered 2014 collaboration pushed the shell into a different fashion conversation, bringing Penny’s on-court legacy into the streetwear wardrobe. Then came another reminder of its staying power: the “Galaxy” returned in 2025, reviving the constellation graphics and glow-in-the-dark outsole that made the 2012 original so memorable. Some shoes age quietly. Foamposites still enter the room first. 2. Michael Jordan And The Air Jordan RevolutionYou can’t talk about basketball’s influence on sneaker culture without addressing the Jumpman in the room. When the Air Jordan 1 reached the public in 1985, it gave fans a way to buy into Michael Jordan’s emerging identity: ambitious, expressive, and difficult to ignore. Nike’s “Banned” campaign added a rebellious edge, although the shoe behind the original NBA uniform controversy was the Nike Air Ship. The distinction matters, even when the marketing became more famous than the paperwork.Jordan’s appeal also found a powerful creative partner in Spike Lee. Appearing as Mars Blackmon in the Air Jordan 3 adverts, Lee helped connect basketball stardom with Black cinema and street style. The shoes became part of a conversation that reached people who weren’t studying the league table. That is the heart of Jordan’s cultural influence. A pair could represent sporting ambition, personal taste or a connection to an era you never experienced first-hand.Today, you don’t need a reliable jump shot to have strong feelings about a Jordan colourway. The relationship has become personal, passed between generations through favourite pairs, remembered releases and the occasional argument over which model deserves the crown. 3. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander: Converse’s Next ChapterLarry Bird wore Converse. Now Shai Gilgeous-Alexander is giving a new generation its own reason to look towards the Star Chevron. His first signature sneaker, the Converse SHAI 001, arrived in 2025, the same year he helped Oklahoma City secure the NBA championship. For OKC’s starboy, the shoe offered a meeting point between his game and his personal style. Co-created with Shai in his role as creative director of Converse Basketball, the design features a padded upper, sculpted shape, and adjustable zip shroud, giving wearers room to change its appearance. It was his own “Be Like Mike” moment, resonating with a new generation of fans who loved the game and wanted their everyday style to carry some of their favourite player’s confidence. But Shai’s chapter has its own handwriting. His involvement in the design makes the trainer an extension of his creative identity, rather than simply another place to put his name. The SHAI 001 belongs in this story as an emerging legacy. Its long-term cultural influence is still unfolding, but the ambition is clear: give fans something they can play in, style their own way, and recognise as unmistakably Shai. 4. Walt “Clyde” Frazier: Style Before The Tunnel FitBefore the tunnel became a fashion runway, Walt “Clyde” Frazier was already dressing for the occasion. The New York Knicks guard brought an unmistakable sense of style to basketball, making him a natural figure for a sneaker that could hold its own beyond the court. The PUMA Clyde debuted in 1973, placing his nickname on a silhouette that would become a lasting part of the brand’s identity. Its appeal was easy to understand: a clean shape, suede finish, and enough personality to work without a basketball uniform. The wider PUMA Suede family would also find a home among B-boys and within hip-hop, showing how communities could give basketball-linked footwear a new rhythm and purpose. That journey involved dancers, collectors, and everyday wearers as well as the athlete whose name helped establish the Clyde.Frazier’s place in sneaker history reminds us that personal style was always part of the endorsement. The player could sell you on the performance. The personality made you want to wear the shoes afterwards. 5. Kobe Bryant: Long Live The Mamba MentalityKobe Bryant’s sneaker legacy carries the same restless ambition that defined his game.He wanted more from his footwear, even when that meant questioning what a basketball shoe was supposed to look like. The Nike Kobe 4, released in 2009, embraced a low-cut design influenced by football boots, helping shift expectations around performance basketball footwear. That willingness to challenge convention remains central to the line. Nike’s Protro approach revisits familiar Kobe designs with updated performance features, keeping the shoes connected to the demands of playing basketball.Their cultural meaning reaches further. For fans, wearing Kobes can express admiration for a player, attachment to a particular basketball era, or a personal connection to the discipline associated with Mamba Mentality. There is something powerful about that relationship. A signature shoe becomes part of how people remember an athlete, then part of how they carry that influence into their own routines.Long live the Mamba Mentality, in the work people put in and the standards they set themselves. 6. A Love Letter To LeBronSome sneaker stories are built around a single unforgettable pair. LeBron James has given collectors an entire archive to explore. His line offers a particularly playful example of how an athlete’s personal world can become part of trainer culture: “Fruity Pebbles”.The cereal-inspired LeBron 4 began as an exclusive design in 2006 before finally receiving a public release in 2024. A reference to his favourite cereal became a pair fans could spend years hoping to own. It’s a small detail with a bigger lesson. Fans connect with the human being behind the highlights. Childhood favourites, personal memories and individual tastes give a signature line stories that team colours alone cannot tell. For collectors, those details offer another way into LeBron’s world. You might remember the basketball being played when a model first appeared, or discover its story years later through a retro release. That is where the love letter lands: in the memories attached to the shoes, and the conversations they keep starting. The Blackprint Lives OnAcross generations, these players have helped shape how we understand sneakers: as sporting equipment, creative expression and objects with personal meaning.Their influence has grown through the communities who wear, collect and reinterpret their shoes. As we close our BLACKPRINT series, we celebrate that exchange, and the Black talent whose impact continues to move from courtside into culture.Tune into our BLACKPRINT 02 – Bass In Black: How Black British Music Shaped UK Trainer Culture here
KAWS X AIR JORDAN 4 ‘DARK GREY’ MAKES ITS COMEBACK IN 2027
Some trainers barely survive a season of hype. Others keep sneakerheads checking resale prices for a decade. Speculative mock-up by @zSneakerHeadz & Sneaker Files Introduction:The KAWS x Air Jordan 4 belongs firmly in the second camp, and a new ‘Dark Grey’ colourway could finally give collectors another shot at the collaboration.Brian Donnelly, better known as KAWS, is reportedly reconnecting with Jordan Brand for a Summer 2027 release. Arriving during the partnership’s tenth anniversary year, this would become its third Air Jordan 4 colourway, following 2017’s ‘Cool Grey’ and ‘Black’ editions. What Could the KAWS Jordan 4 ‘Dark Grey’ Look Like?Think grey skies with considerably better wardrobe potential. The reported ‘Dark Grey/Dark Grey’ colour scheme suggests a tonal look, although official imagery has yet to reveal the finished design.Speculative mock-up by @zSneakerHeadz & Sneaker Files The originals traded the Jordan 4’s familiar finish for textured suede, decorated with KAWS’ recognisable Companion hand artwork. ‘XX’ heel branding and glow-in-the-dark outsoles helped turn an already recognisable silhouette into something collectors wanted to display as much as wear. Those signatures are expected to return, but remain unconfirmed for 2027. Until photographs surface, treat detailed mock-ups as possibilities rather than product previews.KAWS x Air Jordan 4 ‘Dark Grey’ Release Date and PriceThe KAWS x Air Jordan 4 ‘Dark Grey’ is currently expected on 15 May 2027, with men’s sizing and a reported $500 retail price. UK listings indicate £400, while the style code is JU4624-002.Expected release channels include KAWS, Nike SNKRS and select Jordan Brand retailers, although final availability still needs confirmation.Speculative mock-up by @zSneakerHeadz & Sneaker Files That price certainly demands a pause before checkout. Still, for fans who missed the original releases, a fresh colorway offers something more appealing than another evening scrolling resale listings. For now, keep the date pencilled in and watch for official images. Ten years later, KAWS could make grey feel exciting again.Next on Crep Daily: Nike Air Force 1 Low ‘Triple White’ Squares Up
NIKE AIR FORCE 1 LOW ‘TRIPLE WHITE’ SQUARES UP
Someone at Nike has been cutting corners. Literally. The Nike Air Force 1 Low Square Toe ‘Triple White’ gives the familiar white sneaker an angular makeover, with a reported release date of 6 November 2026.For a shoe that can command attention with little more than a fresh white upper, changing its outline is a surprisingly loud statement. Forget a new colourway or another collaboration: this time, the conversation starts right at your toes. The Air Force 1 Gets SquareThe biggest departure sits up front, where the rounded toe gives way to an extended forefoot with a flat edge and pronounced corners. There’s something of a dress shoe about it, with a little cowboy boot attitude thrown into the mix. Your Forces appear to have made other plans for the evening.Elsewhere, Nike keeps things familiar. The all-white leather upper and traditional heel construction preserve the visual connection to the original, making the altered proportions especially noticeable. From behind, you could easily miss the difference. Turn sideways, and the plot thickens. That balance is what makes this version interesting. White-on-white styling usually lets an Air Force 1 blend into almost any wardrobe; here, the simplest colour treatment puts the unusual shape under the spotlight.First shown during Paris Fashion Week earlier this spring, the design has already divided opinion. A matching ‘Triple Black’ edition is also set to arrive, offering the same squared silhouette in a darker finish.Nike Air Force 1 Square Toe Release DetailsAccording to Sneaker Bar Detroit, the Nike Air Force 1 Low Square Toe ‘Triple White’ is scheduled for 6 November 2026, priced at $130, through Nike and select retailers. Unisex sizing is expected, with the pair listed under style code JF7766-100.In other sneaker news, Nigel Sylvester x Air Jordan 6 'Grey Fog' Set For Fall 2027
NIGEL SYLVESTER X AIR JORDAN 6 'GREY FOG' SET FOR AUTUMN 2027
Nigel Sylvester is switching gears once again. Image courtesy of @zsneakerheadz & Sneaker Files The BMX superstar is taking his partnership with Jordan Brand for another spin, as the Nigel Sylvester x Air Jordan 6 ‘Grey Fog’ is reportedly joining the sneaker release calendar for Autumn 2027.And by the looks of things, Nigel isn't planning on hitting the brakes anytime soon.Following news of his upcoming Air Jordan 6 ‘Paperboy’, the Queens-born BMX rider is reportedly preparing a second colourway of Michael Jordan's iconic sixth signature silhouette.A Retro Ride With a Gaming Twist? While the inspiration behind the Air Jordan 6 ‘Grey Fog’ remains under wraps, there's an interesting theory making the rounds.Remember Paperboy? The legendary 1985 arcade game that had players delivering newspapers on bicycles while dodging everything in sight?Well, the upcoming colourway might be taking a nostalgic trip down memory lane.Dressed in Grey Fog, Metallic Silver, Lyon Blue and Varsity Maize, the sneaker's rumoured palette shares similarities with the classic Nintendo game's grey cartridge and colourful cover artwork.Coincidence? We'll let you decide.Image courtesy of @zsneakerheadz & Sneaker Files Although official images haven't surfaced, early reports suggest a predominantly grey upper, complete with Nigel's signature miniature Swoosh near the toe and unmistakable ‘Bike Air’ branding. When Is the Nigel Sylvester x Air Jordan 6 ‘Grey Fog’ Releasing?According to Sneaker Files and zSneakerHeadz, the Nigel Sylvester x Air Jordan 6 ‘Grey Fog’ is expected to arrive in Autumn 2027, potentially between July and September. The collaboration will reportedly land through Nike SNKRS and selected Jordan Brand retailers, with pricing yet to be confirmed. With two Air Jordan 6 collaborations potentially rolling out in 2027, Nigel Sylvester's sneaker game is showing no signs of slowing down.Next up on Crep Daily: Corteiz Links Up With Nike On The Shox R419 Collection
